Things to see and do in Wells
The main feature of the cit is Wells Cathedral, which is an impressive building with 300 carved figures set up on its West Front. These are thought to represent Christianity through depicting scenes of angels, saints, bishops and kings. The building itself is a stunner, set out in golden limestone and despite the number of years that have passed since it was first constructed, the material remains glorious as ever. The inside of the cathedral has a lot to offer its visitors as well, such as the 600 year old mechanical clock, ‘scissor arches’, and a great stone stairway.
Visit the Bishop’s Palace which is located in beautiful scenery comprising of swans and nature in general. Some of the oldest parts of the building are the most capturing such as the Tudor fireplace and the Undercroft, dating back to the 13th century. You can make your way to the Gallery on the Jacobean staircase to enjoy the portraits of people in significant positions in the past. It is always a great feeling to walk around the gardens and lose yourself in the countryside views. Based on the right weather, you can also see the cathedral reflected in the pool!
The Wells and Mendip Museum is another great attraction of the city. It is mainly focused on the work of Herbert Balch who was a naturalist as well as a geologist and caver. It is possible to explore the past of the area by artefacts and pieces that he brought back from the caves of Mendip, some of which he thought belonged to the Witch of Wookey Hole. The main theme of the museum is archaeology and ancient history but there is also some emphasis on modern history. Items such as pottery and stone carvings of Saints and Kings can be seen here in great detail. There are also arrowheads, spears and large bones of some of the strange creatures that walked the area at night.
Many antiques and collection fairs are held in the Town Hall on a weekly basis. Also of interest are farmers markets and general markets held on Wednesday and Saturday.
